Case Study #5 for Operational Forecasting Services

A snowplowing company had been plowing snow at night from a two-inch snowfall. The snow had stopped shortly before they finished plowing. The person in charge checked the radar and saw there was no additional precipitation indicated. He was about to release his crews. As a final check he made a phone call to Weather Command. Weather Command’s meteorologist told him that freezing drizzle was breaking out to their west. It was light enough that it was not yet detectable by the local radar. Weather Command was able to save this client the cost and headache of letting his crew go, as he would have had to get the people back to do additional salting. The crew took a short break and then dealt with a thin coating of ice that the freezing drizzle produced.
