Case Study #4 for Operational Forecasting Services

A large Electric Utility Company, a client of Weather Command, has a need to know about any weather conditions that may cause disruptions in their service territory. Monday through Friday Management must inform the linemen by 2:30 p.m. that they will be held overtime. Otherwise, the linemen leave and the Utility has a very difficult time getting them back on the job within four hours. On Tuesday at 2 p.m. there were no thunderstorms indicated within 1000 miles of the Utility’s territory, even though the radio and TV weather forecasts were still calling for afternoon thunderstorms. The Utility’s Operations Manager called Weather Command’s meteorologist to inquire about thunderstorm development in their service territory. Weather Command informed him that he did expect thunderstorms in the territory, but the earliest would be 7 p.m. This allowed the manager to release his crews and schedule them to report back at 7 p.m. This saved the Utility over 800 man-hours of overtime pay.
